Ben Koenig, Endurance Athlete

Wisconsin

I got into mountain biking and XC skiing my senior year of High School. I joined the XC ski team to train over the winter for track. I really enjoyed it and started a tradition of skiing the American Birkebeiner every year. A couple years later I was asked to help coach the high school XC ski team in Wausau and got much more serious about skiing. I am now the head coach of the Wausau Nordic Ski team, and ski in the Elite wave at the Birkie and other races in WI and MI.

I got started in Endurance Mountain biking as a challenge for bragging rights. My first summer working at Rib Mountain Cycles, three of us set out to see who would be the top dog at the 24 Hours of 9 Mile. I won the Freak Solo and beat my friends by 50miles, that’s what my endurance racing career. The following two seasons I set my sights on the 24 hour National Championships and finish 3rd (2009) and 4th (2010). The last couple summers I have been finishing school in Health Promotion & Wellness and coaching a summer ski program. I am looking forward to racing the Wausau 24 in 2014.
