Light & Motion still produces its line of lights inside the company’s (Marina) California headquarters. New for 2015 is an updated version of the brand’s popular Taz light that will feature 1500 lumens of darkness-fighting power. Light & Motion is also released a re-vamped line of its popular Urban lights with new colors and materials, as well as a wide variety of power outputs and price ranges. The new Urban lights are also fully submersible to three feet of water, an attribute brought about by the company’s long history in manufacturing scuba diving lights.

The 800 lumens are more than enough to show you the way, and when dimmed to low (175 lumens) it will run for six hours. The single CREE LED shines through a round reflector for a fairly standard beam pattern, but it is more than bright enough to spot potholes in the dark. You don’t have to worry about riding it in the rain either, as it is rated to be submerged in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes (though from the demonstrations I’ve seen, it will last even longer.)
On the sides are two amber lights that help increase visibility from the side, but they can also be turned off if you don’t want to use them. The stretchy rubber mount stayed put on a variety of handlebars, and the unit can swivel freely 360 degrees. New for this year is a removable mount that uses the GoPro interface for a clean mount on various other accessories. It can also be used as a flashlight with the included finger mount and lanyard.

This light simply is the best there is! I use it for urban commuting and trail running. It can light up a bike path or singletrack trail in pitch black but is lightweight and easy to carry. I loved it so much I got my husband one! The best investment I've made for my commute, and I ride or run to work every single day!

I own both the urban 700 and the urban 800, both are my go to bike lights, either for longer night road bike rides, or with the included helmet mount for riding single track at night.

The Lights: In the see-and-be-seen game of nighttime commuting, you’ll want California-based Light & Motion on your team. With days getting shorter, pretty soon you’re bound to be riding in pitch black in at least one direction, and this combination of the Urban 800 headlight and Vis 180 taillight gives you 360-degree visibility and unparalleled bike lane lighting. The aluminum-bodied Vis 180 is 10 times brighter than even the most powerful ‘blinkies’, and the fully waterproof Urban 800 casts enough light for single-track mountain biking, so navigating poorly lit streets won’t be an issue. Both lights are micro-USB rechargeable, made in the USA and feature brilliant amber side lighting that lets cars know you belong on the road.

Every one of Light & Motion's lights is built in Marina, California, making them the only bike light company currently manufacturing their products in the United States. The Urban 800 (left) is fully waterproof, a fact that will make it especially appealing to riders in the wet climes of the Pacific Northwest and the UK. The light includes both a helmet and a handlebar mount, and retails for $179.99 for the Fast Charge version, which will charge fully in 2.5 hours, or $149.99 for the standard version that takes 6 hours to recharge. The Taz 1500 is their flagship off-road light for 2015, boasting 1500 lumens and a burn time of 1.5 hours at the brightest setting. The medium setting brings that time up to 3 hours, and the light will run for 6 hours on the low setting. There's also a Race mode that makes it possible to switch between the high and low setting with one touch rather than cycling though all of the available settings. MSRP: $299.99.
